I’ve always been interested in the creative energy coming from the Cradle of Humanity Africa, and recently I found a intriguing Nigerian Graphic Novel E.X.O. The Legend of Wale Williams, Written and Produced by ROYE OKUPE. It takes place in Lagoon City, Lagos Nigeria in the year 2025. I don’t get to travel much so any creative work that lets me slip into another part of the world gets my attention immediately. Not to mention Nigeria it’s on my “bucket list” of places to visit. Ok back to this Novel. ENDOGENIC EXOSKELETAL ORDNANCE, yes it’s a suit and what a suit it is, let’s just say it would give Tony Stark a run for his money It’s much more than just a bad ass EXO suit, it’s a story of tragic loss and friendship rediscovered. The Theme is not new,, a well to do family with a genius obsessed father and a son starved for his fathers love and attention. What I like are the Blends of Nigerian words and meanings through out the novel, I like the mixing of the Old culture with a new futuristic flow. I like that Nigeria is presented in a progressive and bold way . The characters are beautiful and sleek, I know this first part “part One” has to take the time to introduce the characters and roll them out in such a way as to not overwhelm the the reader. I felt that they could have been rolled out a little sooner, I wanted more time to get to know the characters. I guess that’s a complement to the story teller, because I wanted more!
The glossy feel of the Novel and the bold yet soft colors gives this graphic novel a welcoming feel great for teens and adults. You best believe this Writer is just getting started, and I can’t wait for part two.
Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey To serve our Fatherland With love and strength and faith. The labour of our heroes past Shall never be in vain, To serve with heart and might One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity
